Adriaen van Stalbemt

Born : 1580Died : 1662

Adriaen van Stalbemt, also called Stalbent, belonged to Antwerp’s seventeenth-century painting community. After a youth spent in Middelburg, he became a master in Antwerp in 1609–1610 and later visited England. His repertoire includes landscapes, religious subjects, mythology and allegories. The Prado’s Sciences and Arts, around 1650, gathers scholars among paintings and collected objects, making learned conversation a subject for painting.

Within this painted gallery, individual pictures address the destruction of artworks and the protection of Painting by Minerva and Fame. His View of Greenwich, catalogued with Jan van Belcamp in the Royal Collection and dated around 1632, represents Charles I, his family and the court. The still unfinished Queen’s House places this encounter within a specific architectural setting.

This profile brings together identity references for Adriaen van Stalbemt and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
