Adriaen Pietersz van de Venne combined several activities: painting, poetry and the design of prints and book illustrations. Active in Middelburg before settling in The Hague, he also translated the conflicts of his time into allegorical images. Fishing for Souls, painted in 1614 and preserved in the Rijksmuseum, sets Protestants and Catholics on opposite sides of a river; boats and their human catches represent religious competition.
His frontispiece design for Jacob Cats’s Self-Strijt, in 1619, depicts Joseph resisting Potiphar’s wife. The drawing in ink and wash thus serves a moral reflection. In his Self-Portrait at the Mauritshuis, around 1615–1618, the small panel instead presents a man richly dressed in black, without the painter’s customary tools or other attributes of his profession.
