Adriaen Isenbrandt

Died : 1551

Adriaen Isenbrant was active in Bruges in the early sixteenth century and became a guild master in 1510. A connection with Gerard David’s workshop remains plausible, although training there is not established. In the Getty’s Mass of Saint Gregory, Christ appears above the altar with the signs of the Passion, while the saint kneels before this vision.

The Metropolitan Museum’s Man Weighing Gold, around 1515–1520, combines dark, fur-trimmed clothing with a balance and coins. The sitter may have been a merchant, but his identity remains unknown. The National Gallery of Art’s Adoration of the Shepherds, probably painted between 1520 and 1540, places the Child on an overturned basket surrounded by Mary, Joseph and angels, before ruins that open onto a landscape.

This profile brings together identity references for Adriaen Isenbrandt and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
