Régis François Gignoux is a landscape painter whose work is distinguished by its scenes of snow and winter. Questroyal highlights, in these landscapes, an attention to the truth of places and their intimacy. His training takes him from the Académie de St. Pierre de Lyon et de Fribourg to the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, where a scholarship enables him to study under Horace Vernet and Paul Delaroche. Questroyal indicates that he enrolled at the school at the age of nineteen and worked there with Delaroche. In 1840, he emigrated to the United States and settled in Brooklyn, New York State.
He exhibited his works at the National Academy of Design from 1842. Among the earliest documented milestones is Interior of Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, exhibited at the Boston Athenæum in 1844. Over the course of his career, his paintings were also shown at the Brooklyn Art Association, the Salon de Paris and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 1843, he briefly taught George Inness, then eighteen years old. Works by Gignoux are noted in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Mount Desert Frenchman Bay, State of Maine is documented as an oil on canvas measuring 35 × 50 cm, signed “R. Gignoux” at the lower right and signed and titled on the verso.
