Arturo Rietti (1863–1943), born in Trieste, is chiefly known as a portraitist. After a stay in Tuscany, he began training in Munich in 1884, later working between Trieste and Milan. His practice encompassed drawing, pastel and oil painting; the Fondazione CRTrieste collections include studies of faces and self-portraits among his works.
Portrait of the Fencing Master Barbasetti, a pastel on cardboard of 1896 in the Museo Revoltella, concentrates a palette of whites and greys on the sitter’s face. Light falling from above intensifies his expression. The foundation also owns Portrait of a Woman with a Small Hat, signed and dated 1935. The racial laws of 1938 cast a shadow over the final years of the painter, who was of Jewish descent.
This profile brings together identity references for Arturo Rietti and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
