The Austrian painter Adolf Helmberger (1885–1967), born and deceased in St. Gilgen, is particularly associated with the landscapes of the Salzkammergut, which he painted mainly after the First World War. His training took him from Salzburg, where he studied under Franz Kulstrunk, to Munich, to Simon Hollósy’s private school, and then to the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, where he studied under Christian Griepenkerl and Alois Delug.
From 1915, he took part in the First World War as a volunteer war painter. After the war, the landscapes of the Salzkammergut occupied a major place in his work; catalogued titles include “St. Wolfgang” (1909) and “Bergwiesen bei St. Gilgen, Abersee” (1922). Another listed title, “Blick auf Bad Gastein”, is dated 1936.
Helmberger became a member of the Wiener Künstlergenossenschaft in 1922. He was awarded the title of professor in 1956.
The Schuler Auktionen catalogue also describes a portrait entitled “Bildnis einer Dame”, painted in 1951: an oil on canvas measuring 49 × 39 cm, signed and dated at the lower right.
This profile brings together identity references for Adolf Helmberger and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
