Antonio Bueno

Born : 1918Died : 1984Documented citizenships : Italy

Born in Berlin in 1918, Antonio Bueno is an Italian painter of Spanish origin whose education and early years chart a path across several countries: he begins studying art in Spain and Switzerland, then settles in Italy with his brother Xavier in 1940. He acquires Italian citizenship in 1970. After a Post-Impressionist phase, in the aftermath of the Second World War he joins Gregorio Sciltian’s school and produces trompe-l’œil paintings.

His exhibition history includes venues in Italy and abroad: he exhibits with Xavier at the Galleria Manzoni in Milan in 1941, then is invited for the first time to the Rome Quadriennale in 1947. In 1955, he is listed as participating in the Rome and Turin Quadriennales and the Milan Biennale; the following year, he takes part in the Venice Biennale. In 1957, he is presented at the World House Galleries in New York in the exhibition “Italy”, then returns to Venice for the XXXIV Biennale in 1968.

In 1981, La Nuova Strozzina at the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence dedicates the retrospective exhibition “Antologica 1936-1981” to him. He also takes part in the XLI Venice Biennale in 1984. “Marinaretto”, an oil painting on fibreboard dated 1976, bears a signature; the date and title are on the reverse. It measures 300 × 200 mm; its published provenance is a Swiss private collection.
