Émile Charles Dameron

Born : 1848Died : 1908Documented citizenships : France

The French painter Émile-Charles Dameron, whose approach is close to that of the Barbizon School, takes nature and its figures as central themes. His career leads him to paint in Brittany, notably in Clisson, Dinard and Concarneau. Born in Paris on 20 May 1848 under the name Charles Émile Jean Dameron, he dies in the same city on 21 January 1908. He trains with Léon Germain Pelouse and Constant Troyon; it may have been at the latter’s encouragement that he travelled to Pont-Aven. The account of the sale of his studio presents his stay in Brittany as an episode from his early years rather than as the sole setting of his activity.

Two works document different stages of his work: Au bord de l’Aven, dated 1878 and listed at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper, followed by Paysage aux chrysanthèmes, dated May 1892 and listed at the Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain de Saint-Étienne Métropole. The landscape Luchon. chemin du Port de Vénasque is described as an oil on canvas and appears on page 111 of Gouffres, chaos, torrents et cimes. Dameron is made a knight of the Légion d’honneur in 1897. He dies at the Clinique Oudinot, in Paris’s 7th arrondissement, and is buried in the 12th division of Montparnasse Cemetery.
