Élisée Maclet

Born : 1881Died : 1962Documented citizenships : France

Élisée Maclet (1881–1962), a French painter born in Lihons, in the Somme, and who died in Paris, is distinguished by subjects ranging from the old village of Montmartre and the Paris suburbs to bouquets of flowers. Before the war, his palette, dominated by blue-greys, green and pink, accompanies a style of painting described as simple, with expressive colours.

In his early days in Paris, he held various odd jobs and worked notably as a decorator at the Moulin Rouge. In 1918, he discovered the sea and painted in Normandy; from 1924 to 1930, his work took him to the south of France, Corsica and Brittany. During the Second World War, he painted views of Paris in the snow.

The Galerie Nicolas Poussin organised a retrospective of his work in 1957; in February 1960, Maclet presented 72 works in an exhibition at the Galerie Aymonier devoted to 20th-century painters. Works are recorded in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Musée d’art moderne Richard-Anacréon in Granville, where seven paintings are listed, as well as at the Musée national d’art moderne in Paris and the Petit Palais in Geneva.
