Édouard Pail

Born : 1851Died : 1916Documented citizenships : France

The French painter Édouard Pail, born in Corbigny, made the landscapes of the Nivernais the principal subject of his work. His plein-air practice and affiliation with the Crozant School define a body of painting attentive to pastures, heathland, farmyards and shaded rivers, in a palette dominated by greens and browns. Trained by the painter and engraver Hippolyte Lavoignat, and later at the École des beaux-arts de Nevers, he presented two landscapes at the Salon de Paris as early as 1870: Le Ruisseau de Varennes près Corbigny and Les Chaumes de Corbigny.

Appointed professor at the École des beaux-arts de Nevers in 1877, Pail left the post for Paris in 1880. He then travelled to England, Egypt, Palestine and Algeria, where he married in 1886, before settling in Paris. He nevertheless returned regularly to work in Corbigny during the fine season, maintaining a connection with the landscapes that occupy a central place in his painting. A member of the Salon des artistes français from 1888, he received a medal there in 1893 and became an Officer of Public Instruction in 1903. His submissions included Le Soir au Mont Sabot, exhibited in 1912, followed by L’Étang aux bruyères, shown in 1914.

Works by Pail are listed in several fine arts museums, including those in Brest, Clamecy, Clermont-Ferrand and Perpignan. In Nevers, the Musée de la Faïence et des Beaux-Arts holds La Carrière de ciment (Environs de Nevers, route des Saulaies), an oil on canvas. In 2003, his name was also included among those of the artists featured in the exhibition Les Peintres de l’Autre Rive. Alger 1830-1930, at the Musée de la Castre in Cannes.
