The National Gallery presents Eugène Fromentin as a painter specialising in African scenes. He exhibited at the Salon from 1847 onwards. The Art Institute of Chicago lists, among others, Women of the Ouled Nayls (1867), Men on Horseback Beside River (1869) and On the Nile (1871). These works, dated over a period of four years, offer some concrete points of reference in his painting.
His work was not limited to painting: he was also the author of Les Maîtres d’Autrefois, a book devoted to Dutch and Flemish painting, published in 1876.
