Takanori Oguiss

Born : 1901Died : 1986Documented citizenships : Japan

Takanori Oguiss, a Japanese painter born in 1901 and who died in 1986, is notably associated with a body of work shown in Europe and Japan. His works have been shown in numerous exhibitions in both territories. An auction catalogue entry reports that he had a longstanding friendship with the painter Tsuguharu Foujita.

In 1981, Oguiss was received by Emperor Hirohito, according to the same catalogue entry. In Inazawa, Japan, a museum is dedicated to him and includes a reconstruction of his Paris studio.

Among the documented works is Nature morte à la cruche, an oil on canvas measuring 65.5 × 92 cm, signed lower right and titled on the reverse. The catalogue entry places its execution probably at the beginning of Oguiss’s stay at Montmartre aux Artistes: a wall calendar bearing the date 1936 is cited as an indication. Café-Bar Rue de Charonne à Paris, an oil on canvas dated 1959 and measuring 60 × 73.5 cm, was sold for CHF 42,000 excluding fees. Its published provenance mentions Galerie Ferrero in Geneva, followed by a Swiss private collection. Another title, Banlieue de Paris, refers to a signed oil on canvas measuring 38 × 46.5 cm, also stated to have come from Galerie Ferrero in Geneva.

This profile brings together identity references for Takanori Oguiss and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.

40 references are documented at Artcurial Beurret Bailly Widmer, Dobiaschofsky, DognyAuction, Genève Enchères, Germann, Schuler, Piguet. Each record links to its source; the amounts are not a general valuation of the artist’s work.
