The painter and draughtsman Adam van Noort, based in Antwerp, was born there in 1562 and died there in 1641. He learned to paint from his father, Lambert van Noort, until his father’s death in 1571. After returning to Antwerp in 1586, he married Elisabeth Nuyts, the daughter of a merchant from the city, then became a master the following year and opened a studio where around thirty pupils trained, including Sébastien Vrancx, Peter Paul Rubens and Jacob Jordaens. In the same year, he joined the Guild of Saint Luke. Elected dean in 1597, he left the position in 1602 following complaints about the handling of the accounts.
His work consisted mainly of history painting and drawing, as well as religious subjects; he also contributed to the decoration of several churches in Antwerp. In 1594, he collaborated with Maarten de Vos on the decoration for the Joyous Entry of Archduke Ernest of Austria. According to the source, it was around 1600 that he developed a recognisable style, transforming Frans Floris’s heroic Romanism into smaller compositions populated by numerous small figures. The Preaching of Saint John the Baptist, dated 1601 and held at the Rubenshuis, is an example. His work as a draughtsman also includes 32 scenes from the life of Saint Clare of Assisi, engraved by Adriaen Collaert in Icones S. Claræ, around 1615. In his late works, he partly adopted the monumentality and vigorous execution that Jordaens himself had learned from Rubens. The attribution of some works can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from that of works by his pupils.
