Sophía Vári

Born : 1940Died : 2023Documented citizenships : Greece

Sophía Vári (1940–2023), born in Attica and trained in Paris, moved from figurative painting to abstract sculpture. Her childhood was spent in Switzerland, Greece and London. Her practice also encompassed jewellery and monumental works, and she began making collages in 1992. The Pera Museum exhibition of 2013–2014 brought her marble and bronze sculptures together with her paintings, showing how volumes, layers and surfaces connect these different media.

Le Roi and La Reine, two polychrome bronzes of 2000 catalogued by Yorkshire Sculpture Park, enlarge chess pieces to a height of three metres. Black and white are distributed across assembled geometric forms. Usually opposed on the chessboard, these colours coexist within each construction.

This profile brings together identity references for Sophía Vári and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
