Jules Coignet, who was born in 1798 and died in 1860, studied under Jean-Victor Bertin but favoured a naturalistic approach to landscape. He transmitted his practice in the Cours complet de paysage of 1848. His panorama of Chailly, dated 1834 and held at the Nationalmuseum, builds depth through fine accents and gradations within the Fontainebleau Forest.
View of Bozen with a Painter, dated 1837, in Washington demonstrates his Italian subjects and uses oil on paper mounted on canvas. In View of Beirut of 1844, at the Metropolitan Museum, lively brushwork conveys Mediterranean light. Coignet inscribed the place and date into the still-wet paint with the wooden end of his brush, preserving a trace of the picture’s making.
This profile brings together identity references for Jules Coignet and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
