Jean-Baptiste Greuze was an eighteenth-century French painter particularly recognised for portraits and genre scenes. Childhood, education and family relationships occupy a central place in his work. Gestures and facial expressions convey both affection and the tensions of domestic life, giving private experience a particular emotional significance for the viewer.
In Broken Eggs, painted in 1756 and held by the Metropolitan Museum, an everyday incident carries a moral meaning; seventeenth-century Dutch painting was among his sources. The Village Bride, an oil on canvas of 1761 at the Louvre, gathers men, women and children around an engaged couple. Exhibited at the Salon as the moment when the father hands over the dowry to his future son-in-law, it turns family life into a collective narrative with the ambition of history painting.
