Hans Zatzka

Born : 1859Died : 1945Documented citizenships : Austria

Hans Zatzka, an Austrian painter who lived from 1859 to 1945, is associated with academically grounded and religious painting, whose repertoire includes sacred figures as well as allegorical and fantastical subjects. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1877 to 1882 under Christian Griepenkerl, Carl Wurzinger and Carl von Blaas. In 1880, he received the Goldene Füger-Medaille, which his biography describes as his first award. The motifs cited in connection with his work include guardian angels, fairies, cupids, female and sensual figures, as well as allegories.

In 1885, according to his biography, he received his first public commission: the decoration of the ceiling of the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden. He also worked with his brother, an architect, and produced frescoes for buildings designed by him. The source also attributes numerous church decorations in Vienna, Mayerling, Olmütz and Innsbruck to him. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, many works were photographed for publication as postcards. In 1924, the reproduction company KAMAG commissioned up to two paintings a week from him. According to the biography, most of his work is now in private collections.
