Trained in drawing and painting at the academic schools in Roubaix under Constantin Mils, Rémy Cogghe pursued a career that linked his training in Roubaix with stays in several cities and regions. He travelled for five years, including to Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Madrid and Toledo, as well as to Algeria, Italy and Tunisia, then returned to settle in Roubaix in 1885. There he painted commissioned portraits, particularly of local dignitaries, and paintings devoted to scenes of everyday life in the region.
La Piscine in Roubaix holds several works by the artist: Portrait of a Woman (1880), View of the Campanile of San Francesco della Vigna from Campo de Santa Ternita in Venice (c. 1882), The Model at Rest (1882) and Women Presented to Octave as Slaves (1883). A collection of drawings and preparatory sketches is held at the folklore museum in Mouscron. The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Tournai owns The Quarrel: The Final Blow, an oil painting on canvas, while the Hirschsprung Collection in Copenhagen holds View of Italy, also painted in oil on canvas.
