Roland Oudot

Born : 1897Died : 1981Documented citizenships : France

The French painter and lithographer Roland Oudot, born in Paris in 1897, also worked in engraving, mural painting, theatre design and book illustration. From 1915, he worked as an assistant to Léon Bakst for the Ballets Russes, a collaboration that continued until Bakst’s death in 1923. In 1919 and 1920, he also designed furniture and textiles for Louis Süe and André Mare. From 1919, he took part in the Salon d’automne in Paris and was associated with the group of painters of poetic reality, alongside Maurice Brianchon, Raymond Legueult, Christian Caillard and Jules Cavaillès.

Several commissions attest to the range of his work. In 1937, he painted the mural Les Moissons for the amphitheatre of the Institut national agronomique on rue Claude-Bernard in Paris, and La Sonate for the foyer of the Théâtre national populaire at the Palais de Chaillot. He also created a work for the dining room of the passenger ship Ferdinand de Lesseps. In 1939, he designed the sets and costumes for Ondine by Jean Giraudoux, directed by Louis Jouvet at the Théâtre de l’Athénée. Book illustration occupied an important place in his work: in 1936, he produced twenty-eight original lithographs for Thérèse Desqueyroux by François Mauriac; in 1944, his seventeen lithographs for Sylvie – Souvenirs du Valois by Gérard de Nerval were published. For Sarn by Mary Webb, published in 1950, he created fifty-five compositions, engraved by Théo Schmied. He was a member of the Société des peintres-graveurs français.

His exhibitions also took him beyond France: the Valentine Gallery in New York presented his work in 1929. The Musée des beaux-arts de Neuchâtel devoted a retrospective to him from June to September 1963, and the Galerie des Granges in Geneva presented Roland Oudot, cinquante ans de peinture in October and November 1973. Roland Oudot died in 1981.
