Roger Mühl

Born : 1929Died : 2008Documented citizenships : France

Trained at the École des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg, Roger Mühl began his studies there in 1939, interrupted them during the war, and resumed them from 1945 to 1948. He created murals for schools, first in Ittenheim in 1952, then in several French regions—in Brittany, Normandy and Paris—in 1954 and 1955 at the request of the Ministry of National Education. He settled in Montreux-Château in 1954. He also undertook public commissions as part of the French 1% artistic scheme and extended his practice to stained glass and tapestries, notably in Aubusson, at the Pinton workshop.

A painter of colour, he prepared his paintings through numerous drawings in which he explored the relationships between lines and masses. Portraits and still lifes feature in his work, but landscape is its principal subject. In 1960, he took up lithography at Fernand Mourlot’s workshop. His work also included illustration, notably for Denis Rougemont’s L’Aventure occidentale de l’homme, published by André Sauret in Monte-Carlo in 1972.

The Galerie de Paris devoted a solo exhibition to him in 1960. In 1965, he left eastern France to settle in Grasse, before moving to Mougins about ten years later. The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Strasbourg acquired two of his works.
