Raffaele Carelli (1795–1864), born in Monopoli and deceased in Naples, belonged to a family of painters that also included his sons Consalvo and Gabriele. Arriving in Naples in 1815, he initially worked for a restorer before training with Wilhelm Huber. His relationships with Anton Sminck van Pitloo and Giacinto Gigante connected him with the early developments of the Posillipo school.
His landscapes combine precise observation with Romantic feeling, while his portraits and genre scenes retain a more academic finish. Appointed honorary professor of landscape painting in Naples in 1830, he received a gold medal in 1833. He accompanied the Duke of Devonshire to Sicily in 1834 and Asia Minor in 1839, producing drawings and watercolours preserved at Chatsworth.
