Born in Ajaccio in 1907 and died in 1985, Pierre Ambrogiani was a French painter and sculptor whose painting practice is described as expressionist and self-taught. According to descriptions of his works, his Provençal landscapes, still lifes and nudes are distinguished by a thickly impasted surface and vivid colours, with reds and oranges occupying a prominent place.
The Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region was his home throughout his life. He often travelled by car through the French countryside and stopped to paint outdoors whenever a motif caught his attention. Over the course of his career, he was also in contact with several artists, including Marc Chagall.
In 1962, he was commissioned to create frescoes and stained-glass windows in the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Marseille, reflecting an involvement that also extended to monumental decoration. Works by Ambrogiani are held in the collections of the Musée des beaux-arts de Marseille and the Musée d’art et d’histoire de Meudon.
