Makinti Napanangka was a Pintupi artist from Australia’s Western Desert who died in 2011. From the Lake MacDonald region, she began painting at Kintore in the mid-1990s. Her networks of pale lines refer, among other things, to body painting and hair-string skirts worn during women’s ceremonies.
Women’s Ceremony, dated 2000, uses synthetic polymer paint on canvas. Designs associated with Lupulnga, painted at Kintore in 2006, employs the same material in a vertical format approximately ninety-one by sixty-two centimetres. Neither painting exceeds one metre in height. The titles of these works in the National Gallery of Victoria identify connections with ceremony and land. Repeated marks thus contribute to a practice rooted in specific cultural references and relationships.
This profile brings together identity references for Makinti Napanangka and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
