Ossip Lubitch

Born : 1896Died : 1990

Ossip Lubitch’s career spans painting, graphic arts and the performing arts. In Berlin, he creates theatrical sets with Tchelitchev and Pougny for the Opera, the Deutsches Theater and the Blue Bird Theatre; he also works in film with Lazare Meerson. In 1923, a commission to decorate a Montmartre cabaret leads him to settle in Paris, where he earns a living designing interiors for cabarets, restaurants and apartments.

In Montparnasse, he frequents the circle of Swiss painters and spends extended periods with Cuno Amiet. His graphic work includes printmaking, pastel and watercolour. In the early 1930s, the circus becomes a recurring subject: clowns, dancers and harlequins offer him a field for rhythmic variations. In 1934, he publishes a group of works on this subject in the album Le Cirque, comprising ten etchings with aquatint and published by Les Quatre Chemins.

Interned at Drancy during the war, Lubitch secretly draws men, women and children in the camp. These drawings are later bequeathed to the Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem and to the collection of Beit Lohamei Haguetaot, near Haifa. His work is shown at the Galerie Aktuaryus in Zurich in 1935, followed by a retrospective organised by Galerie Zack in 1948. In 1950, Galerie Sagot-Le Garrec exhibits his work in drawing, printmaking, pastel and watercolour. The source also mentions an exhibition at Galerie Durand-Ruel in 1967, followed in 1983 by exhibitions at the Salons de la Rose-Croix and Galerie Colette Dubois. In 1976, P. J. Balbo publishes a retrospective collection of his drawings and washes.
