David Teniers the Younger

Born : 1610Died : 1690

David Teniers the Younger (1610–1690), also known as David Teniers II, is associated with peasant and high-society scenes, as well as paintings of art galleries. Born in Antwerp, he was probably trained by his father, David Teniers the Elder. The work of Adriaen Brouwer was an important influence on his career: Teniers offered a more refined version of Brouwer’s peasant scenes before also creating scenes of high-society life.

By 1649, he was probably already working for the King of Spain, Prince William of Orange and Archduke Leopold William, Governor of the Netherlands. He settled in Brussels in 1651, where Archduke Leopold became his principal employer. His gallery paintings were based on the collection assembled by Archduke Leopold William.

Works listed by the Art Institute of Chicago include The Flageolet Player, dated 1635/40, and The Guardhouse, dated c. 1645. Teniers’ success was reflected, among other things, in the acquisition of a country house in 1662 and the granting of a patent of nobility in 1680. He enjoyed international popularity during his lifetime and in the 18th century, particularly in France.
