Niclas Lafrensen

Born : 1737Died : 1807Documented citizenships : Sweden

Niclas Lafrensen the Younger, known in France as Nicolas Lavreince or Lavrince, was a Swedish artist born and deceased in Stockholm, in 1737 and 1807. Trained by his father, the miniaturist Niklas Lafrensen the Elder, he initially practised miniature painting, continuing this family tradition.

On his return to Sweden in 1773, he was appointed a member of the Stockholm Academy and court painter; he returned to Paris the following year. In the French capital, he produced numerous Rococo-style drawings up to the Revolution, intended as models for engravers such as De Launay, Janinet and Helman. Their subjects, variously amorous, playful or light-hearted, were reproduced by around thirty contemporary engravers: his compositions thus circulated as prints.

After returning to Stockholm after 1791, he painted portraits, small historical scenes and fêtes galantes, continuing a body of work that encompassed several genres. Among the works mentioned is Les Offres séduisantes, engraved by Delignon around 1800. The Art Institute of Chicago also lists Le Repentir Tardif, dated around 1760–1790, and The Tradeswoman in the Dressing Room, dated 1782.
