Pietro Berrettini, known as Pietro da Cortona, was a seventeenth-century Italian painter whose decorations helped establish the Baroque idiom in Rome and Florence. In the Palazzo Barberini, his Triumph of Divine Providence transforms the vault into an illusionistic space. Moving figures, foreshortening and openings onto the sky give the painting an expansive scale that visually exceeds the limits of the building itself.
In Florence, Ferdinando II de’ Medici commissioned him in 1641 to decorate the Planetary Rooms of the Pitti Palace. Frescoes and stucco develop a programme devoted to the prince’s education and the virtues of government. In the Mars Room, warfare unfolds around the vault while the Medici coat of arms occupies its centre. The Ages of Humanity in the Stove Room also demonstrate his interpretation of ancient narratives.
This profile brings together identity references for Pietro da Cortona and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
