SwissArtGallery · Documented identity
For Michel Jouenne, landscape is a starting point rather than a subject to reproduce: Provence is among his sources of inspiration, but his repertoire also extends to seascapes, birds, urban scenes and still lifes. He described his painting as a transposition intended to convey the emotion evoked by a place, and his gesture as a spontaneous and free reinterpretation. Refusing to confine himself to a single subject, he said he sought to renew his pictorial experience.
Jouenne described himself as self-taught, without a teacher, although he had completed his teaching qualification before becoming a secondary-school teacher. He worked in two studios, in Meudon and Eygalières, where he had a studio from 1973. He reported that he had bought an old shepherd’s cottage in Maussane in 1973 and associated his stay in the South with his attachment to the Mediterranean; Provence remained, in his view, a fundamental source of inspiration.
He said that he used spatulas and palette knives to paint, but also worked with his fingers. L’Espace Jouenne states that his works have been exhibited around the world, without specifying locations or dates. According to Galerie Vieceli, he received awards and medals between 1973 and 2006, including the gold medal of Arts, Sciences et Lettres, the title of Chevalier of Cultural and Artistic Merit, and a first prize for lithography. Galerie Vieceli also published a book devoted to the artist, entitled « Hommage au pays des Fjords ».
