Born in Cologne in 1932, Shlomo Koren left Germany with his parents in 1936; the family settled in Palestine under the British Mandate. He trained at the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem until 1959, then travelled to Europe with his wife in 1960 and chose to remain in Amsterdam. The page devoted to his work describes detachment as a theme in his abstract and minimalist oeuvre; it also reports that Koren felt close to the work and themes of sculptors Micha Ullman and Joel Shapiro.
Several works are noted in urban settings: Cylinder in Space (1972) at the Billy Rose Art Garden in Jerusalem, Two frames (c. 1975) on Churchill-laan in Amsterdam since 1982, Constructie (1976) in Bijlmerpark and Tension pieces (1977) at Amsterdam Holendrecht station. This presence extends to other sites: Bow Form (1984) is noted at Haverford College in Pennsylvania, and Shelter (1993) on Laanderstraat in Heerlen. Labyrint (1994), near the Twentekanaal west of Lochem, and Henriette Herz Park (2005), at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, are presented as land art projects. At Rembrandtpark in Amsterdam-West, Growing X took the form of two rows of trees designed to grow into an X; this natural work was later uprooted.
In 2011, Koren took part in the international sculpture exhibition ArtZuid in Amsterdam with Hommage to the Architecture. A lot attributed to the artist, an untitled 1967 mixed-media work on paper mounted on canvas, signed and measuring 795 × 795 mm, was sold for CHF 380, excluding fees.
This profile brings together identity references for Shlomo Koren and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
