The French painter, printmaker, illustrator and collage artist Max Papart (1911–1994), born in Marseille, developed a practice spanning several media. After attending classes at the École des beaux-arts de Marseille for a time in 1928, he chose to train himself, notably through painting outdoors and studying the masters. In Paris, he worked as a printmaker and printer while continuing to paint and study works in museums; early in his career, he exhibited at the Salon des indépendants and began practising aquatint. During the war, he joined the Resistance and took part in the Liberation of Marseille. From 1946 to 1948, several solo exhibitions of his work were held in Marseille, at the Galerie Da Silva, and then in Nice, at the Galerie Masséna.
From 1958, his work moved away from figurative art: he explored lyrical abstraction and developed collage. Between 1965 and 1971, making bronze medals at the request of the Hôtel de la Monnaie also led him to take up sculpture. He taught printmaking at the Université de Paris-VIII-Vincennes until 1973. He collaborated with Lydie and Robert Dutrou on the publication of large aquatints for the Éditions de La Galerie Ken Nahan.
From 1981, he settled in New Orleans; after this move, solo exhibitions were held in Japan, the United States and France. From 1990, he lived between New York and Paris. The Palais de l’Europe in Menton devoted a retrospective to him. In 1985, a monograph by Roger Green and Jean-Marie Dunoyer was published in French, Spanish and English.
