The Italian painter Mario Cavaglieri (1887–1969), born in Rovigo, Veneto, developed a body of work spanning two distinct periods: the depiction of high society before the war, followed by a post-war commitment devoted entirely to painting. Born into a well-to-do family, he began studying law at the University of Padua, but soon abandoned his studies to turn to art. He began exhibiting at around the age of twenty.
From 1913 to 1920, a period described by the biographical source as his “brilliant years”, he painted high society in a style characterised by a colourful palette and refined handling. A work from 1913, Lesende auf einer Wiese, is described in an auction catalogue as a signed and dated oil on cardboard, with a sight size of 31 × 39 cm.
In 1925, he chose to withdraw to the French countryside and bought the house of Peyloubère, in Pavie, in the Gers; he moved there soon afterwards and lived there until the end of his life. At Peyloubère, some rooms are entirely decorated by the artist. The murals include mythological scenes featuring female nudes and drapery. The residence was listed as a Monument historique in 1996.
At the beginning of the war, Cavaglieri returned to Italy, where he thought he would be safer. His family was deported; he then wandered from city to city before returning to France in 1946. After the war, he devoted himself entirely to painting and later divided his time between Paris and the countryside of the Gers.
The first retrospective of his work was organised at the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse in 1974. In 2007, an international retrospective was held at the Palazzo Roverella in Rovigo, his native city. Many of Cavaglieri’s works are held and exhibited at the Musée des Amériques in Auch.
