Milan Kunc

Documented citizenships : Czechia

Born in Prague on 27 November 1944, Milan Kunc studied at the Academy of Arts in Prague from 1964 to 1967. In 1969, he emigrated to Germany; ten years later, he founded the group Normal with Peter Angermann and Jan Knap.

From 1980, he developed the “International Folklore” programme, which he presented as an art generally understandable to the people. His practice is not limited to painting: he also makes sculptures and photographic works, and organises performances as well as street actions in Wuppertal.

His career took him to live in Cologne, Rome, New York and The Hague, before his return to Prague in 2004. His recognition is situated around 1982, at the time of the rise of the Nieuwe Wilden, or New Fauves. The recorded exhibitions include a presentation at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf in 1982, followed in 1984 by “Von hier aus – Zwei Monate neue deutsche Kunst” in Düsseldorf and a presentation at the Groninger Museum in Groningen.

In 2019, Kunc designed a BMW i8 around contemporary environmental issues. A Lempertz lot entry also describes an untitled work as an acrylic painting on canvas measuring 100 × 90 cm, framed and signed “M.Kunc”. The provenance given for this work mentions an acquisition directly from the artist, followed by a private collection in North Rhine-Westphalia.

This profile brings together identity references for Milan Kunc and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
