Ludvig Munthe (1841–1896) was born in Norway and spent most of his career in Düsseldorf. Following training in Bergen, he moved there in 1861 and studied with Albert Flamm among others. Journeys to the Netherlands and France accompanied his interest in unassuming landscapes, often seen in autumn or winter under subdued light.
The Nasjonalmuseet holds Winter in Germany, an oil on canvas painted in 1869 and purchased in 1870. Fishing Village on the Norwegian Coast, dated 1878, combines a coastal setting, winter and human activity. Awarded a medal at the Paris World’s Fair that year, the painting was donated to the National Gallery in 1881. These works place his practice between Norwegian subjects, German experience and the international exhibition circuit.
This profile brings together identity references for Ludvig Munthe and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
