Born : 1902Died : 1983Documented citizenships : Romania
Trained between Munich and Paris, Magdalena Rădulescu studied at the Grande-Chaumière with Prinet and Angerer, according to the available biographical note. At the age of twenty-four, she married the Italian artist Massimo Campigli; their life together combined work and travel across Europe, with stays mainly in Italy, Romania and France, until their divorce in 1939. Her exhibition activity is reported in Paris, Nice, Lyon, Milan, Rome, London and Lausanne.
Her preferred subjects include carnival figures, Romanian folk dances, weddings and traditional scenes. Often associated with Romanian culture, her paintings are described as hieratic, a treatment which, according to the note, avoids the folkloric register. The note links her search for a primitivist visual language to a centuries-old popular tradition and to the beliefs of an agrarian society. The bibliographic references mention the book by Petru Comarnescu, Magdalena Rădulescu, published in Bucharest by Editura Forum in 1946, as well as the monograph by Mircea Deac, Magdalena Rădulescu: monografie, published in Bucharest by Editura Meridiane in 1980.
