Pieter Aertsen

Died : 1575

Pieter Aertsen, born around 1508, who died in 1575, worked between Amsterdam and Antwerp. He joined Antwerp’s Guild of Saint Luke in 1535 and established a workshop there. Alongside large altarpieces and devotional pictures, he gave market stalls, kitchens and food a new prominence. Everyday objects can occupy the foreground while a biblical episode remains in the distance, adding another layer of meaning.

A Meat Stall with the Holy Family Giving Alms, painted in 1551 and preserved at the North Carolina Museum of Art, spreads meat products before a scene of charity. This arrangement brings material nourishment into relation with spiritual nourishment. Much of Aertsen’s religious production was lost during the iconoclastic destruction of 1566, making his surviving compositions especially important evidence for understanding his work and the pictorial forms he developed.

This profile brings together identity references for Pieter Aertsen and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
