The French painter Louis-Auguste Lapito developed his repertoire of landscapes through journeys that took him to the Midi, Switzerland, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands, before his return to Paris in 1826 and then to Corsica in 1827. One source characterises his approach as nature arranged and painted with meticulous care, in keeping with the ideal of the classical landscape. The distinctions he received in 1833 and 1835 — second- and then first-class medals — mark milestones in his career.
Alpine and Swiss subjects appear early among the works shown at the Salon: Vue prise dans le Simplon is included there in 1827, followed by Vue prise au-dessus du lac de Brientz in 1833. The latter is listed at the museum in Cambrai. Paysage de Corse, dated 1841, is held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts et d’Archéologie Joseph-Déchelette in Roanne. His landscapes also include French sites: a view of the Forest of Fontainebleau, at the place known as « les Quatre Fils Aymon », is shown at the Salon of 1846 and listed at the Musée Paul-Dini in Villefranche-sur-Saône. La Corniche de Gênes, included among the works at the Salon of 1857, is listed at the Musée d’Art et d’Archéologie de Valence. Views of the Mediterranean and northern Italy extend this interest in landscapes of identifiable places. Vue de Menton, côte de Gênes is among the works at the Salon of 1859 and is listed at the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence. At the Salon of 1861, Lapito also presents a Vue du cours du Tessin, aux environs de Dasio-Grande.
