Kumi Sugai

The Japanese painter, sculptor and printmaker Kumi Sugai (also transcribed as Kumi Sugaï) was born and died in Kobe, in 1919 and 1996. Her practice also includes printmaking, which is represented in documents relating to her work.
Acrobates, a gouache and graphite on paper dated 1953, is signed lower right. The work’s catalogue entry mentions its presentation at the Casa del Negromante in Locarno and at the Kestner-Gesellschaft in Hanover, from 12 September to 20 October 1963, where it is listed as number 50 in the exhibition catalogue. Its provenance is given there as the Hecker Jensen collection in Basel, followed by a Swiss private collection.
An untitled work from 1960 is described as a gouache on paper, signed and dated in ink lower right. Another untitled work, in mixed media on paper, bears a black abstract composition on the verso.
