André Lanskoy

The French-Russian painter André Lanskoy, born in 1902 and deceased in 1976, followed a path from his first works made in Kiev to the presentation of abstract paintings, and then to a collaboration on mosaics. According to the biography, he was born in Moscow on 31 March 1902 under the name Andreï Mikhailovitch Lanskoy. In 1918, a refugee in Kiev with his family, he attended Alexandra Exter’s studio and made his first works.
His first exhibition took place in 1923 at the La Licorne gallery, alongside Russian artists including Chaïm Soutine; from 1924, he took part in the Salon d’Automne. In December 1925, the Bing gallery presented 35 of his paintings, including Portrait de la Comtesse Lanskoy. In February 1942, he exhibited abstract paintings at the Berri-Raspail gallery; two years later, from 4 to 20 May, the Jeanne Bucher gallery showed gouaches and canvases. In 1953, the Arthur Tooth & Sons gallery in London devoted an exhibition to his paintings from 1925 to 1953, while he took part in Younger European Painters at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
Several works entered public collections: the state purchased the oil painting Multitude in 1949, and the Guggenheim Museum in New York acquired Lecture à voix basse, an oil painting dated 1957, in 1960. The 1979 donation by Geneviève and Jean Masurel to the LAM in Villeneuve d’Ascq comprises around sixty works by Lanskoy. The Art Institute of Chicago lists, among others, Egypte, dated 1946, and Equestrian Figure, dated 1965.
From 1973 to 1976, Lanskoy collaborated with Carlo Signorini on the creation of around fifty mosaics in Ravenna. In August 1973, a mosaic intended for the entrance hall of the University of Rennes was presented in the Franciscan cloister in Ravenna before being transferred to Rennes. Lanskoy died in his studio on boulevard Pereire, during the night of 21–22 August 1976.
