Philippe François Rousseau (Paris, 1816 – Acquigny, 1887) shifted his practice from landscape painting to still life and animal subjects. He studied at the École des beaux-arts in Paris under Jean-Victor Bertin and may also have received instruction from Antoine-Jean Gros. He exhibited at the Salon from 1834, initially with landscapes; according to the National Gallery, he presented landscapes at the next six Salons before showing still lifes there from 1844. This shift in subject matter is also reflected in works associated with his career: Baudelaire commented on Le Rat des villes et le rat des champs at the 1845 Salon. Rousseau received medals at the Salon in 1845, 1848 and 1855, in the third, first and second class, respectively.
In 1859, he carried out the decoration of the dining room at the Hôtel d’Albe. Works noted in public collections include Chardin et ses modèles, dated 1867, at the Musée d’Orsay, alongside two still lifes depicting game and a basket, then game and a silver dish. Une basse-cour, given by the state in 1849, is held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Chartres; the Musée Magnin in Dijon holds Le Singe aquafortiste. La Nature morte à la pie et au fromage, dated 1883, is recorded at the Musée départemental de l’Oise in Beauvais.
At the 1878 Exposition Universelle, Rousseau presented Le Fromage, Les Pêches and Les Légumes, among other works, as well as works in watercolour and pastel. He was made an officer of the Légion d’honneur in 1870. A sale by Germann Auktionshaus also offered Champagne frappé, a signed oil on wood, and recorded a realised price of CHF 2,400, excluding fees.
