Kostia Terechkovitch’s work spans several genres: dancers, landscapes, portraits, equestrian scenes and family subjects, alongside his work as an illustrator through lithography. He was born in the outskirts of Moscow in 1902 and died in Monaco in 1978; he was of Russian origin and became French through naturalisation in 1943. After completing his baccalauréat, he prepared for art studies in the studio of the Moscow painter Constantin Youon. He arrived in Paris in 1920, at the end of a journey that took him notably through Ukraine, the Caucasus, Persia and Constantinople. In the capital, he attended the Académie Colarossi and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, where he drew; Michel Larionov bought some of his sheets to encourage him. In 1921, the writer and art critic Serge Romoff granted him a monthly allowance so that he could paint. Noticed by the art dealer Charles-Auguste Girard at the 1925 Salon d’automne, he signed a contract with him; the gallery organised his first solo exhibition in 1927. In 1933, he designed the sets and costumes for a performance by the Ballets russes in Monte-Carlo. From 1934, he took part in the exhibitions of the Groupe de l’Amitié, alongside Jeanne Besnard-Fortin, Serge Charchoune and Emmanuel Mané-Katz. He enlisted in the Foreign Legion in 1939 and was demobilised the following year; in 1951, he was appointed a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur.
His subjects include dancers and landscapes: the banks of the Marne, beaches, countryside and villages. In his mature years, he painted mainly his family, particularly his daughters France and Nathalie. His passion for sport also informs equestrian scenes and depictions of racehorses; in Saut de la rivière, he shows his own horse, Antheos, at the head of the field. He also painted portraits of artists, including Ilia Zdanevitch in 1930, Chaïm Soutine in 1933, Pierre Bonnard and Henri Matisse in 1941, and Marc Chagall in 1961. In 1949, he created twelve original lithographs for Les petites filles modèles, poems by René Laporte published by Éditions Wolfsberg in Zurich.
