Known as Julien Gustave Gagliardini, a pseudonym of Julien Gustave Gaillardin, this French painter was born in Mulhouse in 1846 and died in Paris in 1927. His training first took him to the history painter Claude Soulary, then to Léon Cogniet’s studio at the École des beaux-arts de Paris; he made his Salon debut in 1869 with portraits and genre scenes. He became a member of the Société des artistes français in 1883.
From the 1880s onwards, Gagliardini turned away from historical subjects to devote himself to landscape, to which he remained committed until the end of his life. Sites in Auvergne and the south of France were among his preferred subjects. Several of his paintings were purchased by the state: Coup de midi, Provence in 1880, Plein midi, Auvergne in 1891 and À Venise in 1913. Works are recorded in various public collections, including Port de Cassis at the musée Hèbre de Rochefort, Le quai marchand à Toulon at the musée d’Art moderne André Malraux du Havre and Paysage à Laguépie at the musée Baron Gérard de Bayeux. Village au bord de la Méditerranée is held at the musée Gassendi de Digne-les-Bains, Crépuscule, femme dans un pré à la tombée du jour at the musée d’Évreux and Une aire en Provence, plein Août at the musée des Beaux-Arts de Draguignan; Circourt is recorded at the Museu Antônio Parreiras in Niterói, in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
Official recognition also marked his career: he received an honourable mention in 1883, a third-class medal in 1884 and a second-class medal in 1886. At the 1889 Exposition Universelle, he was awarded a silver medal, followed by a gold medal at the 1900 exposition. He was appointed chevalier of the Légion d’honneur in 1893.
