Painter and printmaker Jules Jacques Veyrassat (1828–1893), born and deceased in Paris, trained in Henri Lehmann’s studio and exhibited his first works at the Salon in 1848. He is associated with the Écouen school, where he stayed and attended classes taught by Pierre-Édouard Frère, who became his friend, as well as with the Barbizon school. Pierre-Édouard Frère and Charles-François Daubigny encouraged him to practise etching, an activity that came to occupy an important place in his career.
His work, described as realist, takes rural life and agricultural activities as its subject, particularly animal husbandry and work with horses. His paintings include *Le Repas des moissonneurs* (1862), held at the musée des Beaux-Arts de Chartres; *Les Cascarrottes au lavoir* (1863), at the musée des Beaux-Arts de Béziers; and *La Foire aux chevaux* (1878), at the Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest. The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore also holds *Femme et enfant agenouillés devant une croix*, dated circa 1865. *Les Moissonneurs*, held at the musée des Beaux-Arts de Reims, is dated before 1859.
His prints earned him several medals between 1866 and 1869; he also received a medal for his painting in 1872, and was appointed a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur in 1878. Veyrassat made four etchings for the album *L’Eau forte en…*, published by Cadart between 1874 and 1881, and contributed to two works by Philip Gilbert Hamerton: *Chapters on Animals* (1874), with Karl Bodmer, and *Etching and Etchers* (1880). *Intérieur d’écurie à Samois*, an etching dated 1876, also bears witness to this practice.
