Johann Hermann Kretzschmer (1811–1890) trained with Wilhelm Wach in Berlin and then Wilhelm von Schadow in Düsseldorf. A history, genre and portrait painter, he began with narrative compositions close to Romantic sensibilities. Kinder belauschen das Nest einer Henne, dated 1834, appeared in exhibitions in Düsseldorf and Berlin that same year.
Travel broadened his repertoire: he visited Rome and Sicily in 1838, followed by Greece, Constantinople and Egypt in 1840–1841. Portraits, architectural views and scenes inspired by these journeys joined his European subjects. Permanently based in Berlin from 1845, he received the title of professor in 1856. His work thus combines travel observation, historical narrative and familiar scenes centred on human figures across several different pictorial genres.
This profile brings together identity references for Hermann Kretzschmer and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
