Joseph Bail (1862–1921) came from a family of painters: his father Antoine Jean and brother Franck also practised genre painting. Initially trained by his father, he continued studying with Jean-Léon Gérôme and Carolus-Duran. His work favours interiors and everyday activities, extending the traditions of Chardin and French Realism.
Kitchen boys, servants and housewives become the protagonists of compositions in which utensils play a particularly important role. Copper vessels, earthenware and food provide opportunities for close attention to texture and light. A visit to the Hospices de Beaune subsequently informed his depictions of nursing sisters. La Ménagère, held by the Musée d’Orsay, and La Jolie Pâtissière demonstrate how Bail integrates still life into scenes of work, bringing human presence together with familiar objects.
