Hermann Kaulbach (1846–1909), born and deceased in Munich, was the son of the painter Wilhelm von Kaulbach. After studying medicine, he chose painting and joined Carl Theodor von Piloty’s class at the Munich Academy. His early career centred on historical compositions in the narrative and theatrical tradition of his teacher.
He became widely known above all for pictures of children, fairy-tale scenes and representations of jesters. His work as an illustrator included subjects drawn from Goethe, Gustav Freytag and opera. Illustrated books brought his work to a broader audience than exhibitions alone could reach. This variety connects Munich history painting with narrative imagery intended for the home and childhood, while maintaining his interest in costume and storytelling.
This profile brings together identity references for Hermann Kaulbach and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
