Born on 30 July 1834 in Eberbach, in the Grand Duchy of Baden, Rudolf Epp first trained under Karl Ludwig Seeger, then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carlsruhe. There he studied with Ludwig des Coudres and Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. In 1859, he spent extended periods painting and drawing in the areas around Freiburg im Breisgau and Landstuhl. After marrying in 1862, he settled in Munich the following year.

The Schuler Auktionen catalogue gives its dimensions as 80.5 × 64.5 cm and notes a label from Kunsthaus Bühler, Stuttgart, on the reverse. It also states that the canvas has been relined.
