Pieter de Hooch

Born : 1629

Pieter de Hooch, born in Rotterdam in 1629 and still active in 1684, developed a painting practice attentive to the spaces of domestic life. He joined Delft’s Guild of Saint Luke in 1655 and moved to Amsterdam around 1660. After scenes of soldiers, he favoured courtyards and interiors occupied by a few figures. Doors, windows and corridors open successive perspectives connecting different areas of the picture.

The Courtyard of a House in Delft, dated 1658 and now in London, combines precise masonry with gently observed human relationships. A woman holds a young girl’s hand while another figure stands in the passageway. Light distinguishes spatial zones without breaking their continuity. In his Amsterdam works, rooms become more elegant and colours richer, but architectural organisation remains an essential element of the composition.

This profile brings together identity references for Pieter de Hooch and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
