Hervé Masson was born in Rose-Hill in 1919 and died in Paris in 1990. He developed his work between Mauritius and France. A self-taught painter, he also worked in woodcut. His figures and still lifes become geometrically structured; coloured bands and changing effects of light lead some compositions towards abstraction. Hindu painting and sculpture meet the investigations of Cubism in his work.
Androgyne amoureux, an oil on canvas dated around 1979, belongs to this figurative production. Writing and support for Mauritian independence accompanied his visual practice. Drawings made in prison form a history of slavery and indentured labour in Mauritius, exhibited during his centenary in 2019. Works are held by the Musée d’Art moderne de Paris.
This profile brings together identity references for Hervé Masson and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
