A genre painter, Henri Brispot observes everyday life in scenes that sources describe as often ironic or empathetic; he also creates anecdotal paintings that mock the high clergy. Trained by Émile Lassalle, he later studied with Léon Bonnat at the École des beaux-arts de Paris. His father, Pierre Henri Brispot, was mayor of Mouy.
His career was marked by a third-class medal at the Salon of 1881, followed by a silver medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition. In 1896, he created the poster announcing the first paid screenings of the Lumière brothers’ Cinématographe at the Salon indien du Grand Café in Paris.
Several works are listed in public collections: Autoportrait at MUDO – Musée de l’Oise in Beauvais, and Critique du portrait, dated 1900, at the La Piscine museum in Roubaix. Le Retour du Pardon is held at the Musée du Cloître in Tulle; the work is listed there as a gift from Baron Alphonse de Rothschild in 1898.
This profile brings together identity references for Henri Brispot and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
2 references are documented at Artcurial Beurret Bailly Widmer, Dobiaschofsky. Each record links to its source; the amounts are not a general valuation of the artist’s work.
