Born in Bristol in 1769, Thomas Lawrence died in London in 1830. A precocious draughtsman who was largely self-taught, he established himself as a portraitist of British society, becoming painter to the king in 1792 and president of the Royal Academy in 1820. In Elizabeth Farren, painted in 1790 and now in the Metropolitan Museum, his vigorous brushwork conveys the sheen of satin and softness of fur.
His portrait of Queen Charlotte, painted in 1789, nevertheless remained in his studio: neither the queen nor her husband approved it. Difficulties during the sitting led Lawrence to revise her face repeatedly. Later, for the Prince Regent, he painted a series of leaders allied against Napoleon, now in Windsor’s Waterloo Chamber. These commissions took his career to several European capitals.
